Staying safe: scams every online seller should know

The common tricks aimed at online sellers in Sri Lanka, the simple rules that protect you on MyKade, and where to get real help if something feels wrong.

🛡️ Sellers, suppliers and safety · 3 min read

Wherever money changes hands, someone tries to take it dishonestly. Online sellers are a target because they talk to strangers every day and want to say yes to orders. The good news: a few simple rules stop almost every trick. This post explains the common ones and how MyKade's own rules already protect you.

Rule one: you never handle customers' money

On MyKade, customers always pay MyKade, never the seller. They pay cash on delivery, or through a secure payment link that MyKade texts to them (pay in full or pay an advance). Your profit goes to your wallet when the parcel is delivered, and you withdraw it to the bank account you verified during the identity check.

Remember this rule and many scams fall apart. If anyone asks you to receive money, send money, or "pass on" a payment, something is wrong.

Common tricks to watch for

1. "I've paid you, here's the screenshot"

A "customer" sends a screenshot or SMS saying they've transferred money and asks you to send the parcel quickly, or to refund the "extra" they paid by mistake. Screenshots and messages are easy to fake. And on MyKade, customers don't pay you at all. Don't send money back to anyone, ever.

2. Someone asks for your OTP, PIN or password

A caller or message says they're from a bank, a courier, or even MyKade, and needs the code you just received "to verify your account". Nobody genuine needs your OTP, PIN or password. Sharing it can hand over your account or your bank. Hang up and contact help yourself through the app.

3. "Pay a registration fee to start earning"

Someone offers a "MyKade job" or "reselling package" if you first pay a fee. Joining MyKade as a dropshipper is free, and you sign up yourself in the app with your mobile number. Anyone charging you to join is not MyKade.

4. "Guaranteed income" courses and groups

Promises like "earn a fixed amount every month, guaranteed" are a warning sign. No honest business can promise that. MyKade's own lessons are in the MyKade Academy inside the app.

5. "Use your account for me"

A stranger asks to use your bank account to receive money, or your MyKade account to place orders. This can drag you into fraud that is traced back to your name and your NIC. Your account is verified to you alone; keep it that way.

6. Fake links in messages

A message says your parcel is held, your account is blocked, or you've won a prize, and asks you to click a link and "log in". Don't. Open the MyKade app directly instead of following links you weren't expecting.

7. Suppliers outside the app

Someone offers "the same products cheaper" if you pay them in advance directly. MyKade's suppliers are verified by the MyKade team, and you order through the app. Paying a stranger upfront is how people lose money.

Protect yourself from risky orders too

Not every bad order is a scam, but some cost you. A number that refused parcels before, or an order that doesn't add up, may need a deposit or a confirmation on MyKade. Always confirm every order with a quick call, and tell the customer the full total including delivery before ordering. Returned parcels earn nothing and can affect your seller level.

A simple safety checklist

  • Never share your OTP, PIN or password with anyone.
  • Never send or receive customers' money yourself.
  • Never pay anyone to join or to "unlock" earnings.
  • Never let anyone else use your account.
  • Open the app directly, not links from strangers.
  • When unsure, stop and ask.

Where to get real help

If something feels wrong, contact MyKade through WhatsApp or phone from inside the app, or email [email protected]. Use only these, not numbers or links someone sent you.
