Side income with MyKade: who is it for?

An honest look at who MyKade suits, who it doesn't, and a few questions to ask yourself before you start.

🚀 Getting started · 3 min read

MyKade isn't for everyone, and we would rather say that up front. It suits people who have a little time, know a few people, and are happy to reply to messages. Here is who tends to fit, who doesn't, and how to tell which one you are.

People it can suit

These are examples of situations, not real people, to help you picture it.

A parent at home. Imagine a mother whose children are asleep by 8 pm. She has an hour in the evening, a phone, and many friends in school and family WhatsApp groups. In real Sri Lankan online shops, enquiries peak between 7 and 11 pm, which is exactly when she is free.

Someone with a day job. You work 8 to 5. You can't reply during the day, but you can post a WhatsApp Status in the morning and answer messages after dinner. The busiest hour for enquiries is 9 pm.

A small shop owner. Customers already trust you. You can show items from MyKade on your phone that you don't have space to stock. People who know a seller and come back are the best customers: about 96% of their parcels were delivered.

Someone who knows a lot of people. A three-wheel driver, a tuition teacher, someone active in a village society or a place of worship. Not to push sales on everyone, but because people already ask you for advice.

A retired person. Plenty of time, a wide circle of friends and relatives, and patience to explain things clearly.

A young adult (18 or older). Comfortable with phones, TikTok and Instagram, and willing to learn.

People it probably won't suit

  • You need a guaranteed amount next month. We can't promise any income. Some weeks will be slow.
  • You can't reply to messages for days. About 3 in 4 orders came within a day of the first question, and almost none after 3 days.
  • You want to post once and wait. Selling online is regular, small effort.
  • You would pressure friends into buying. That damages friendships and brings returns.
  • You are under 18. You can't open an account. A parent or guardian can open one in their own name.

Five questions to ask yourself

  1. Can I give it about an hour on most days, especially in the evening?
  2. Do I know at least 20 people I could tell, without spamming them?
  3. Am I comfortable calling a customer to confirm an order?
  4. Can I accept that some orders will come back and earn nothing?
  5. Do I have an NIC and a bank account for the identity check?

If you answered yes to most of these, it's worth trying.

What a side income might look like

Here is a worked example only, not a promise. Imagine your profit is Rs 400 an order, and you get 2 orders a week that are delivered. That is about 8 delivered orders a month, around Rs 3,200 in your wallet. If you get 1 order a day delivered, it would be around Rs 12,000 a month.

Real results can be lower or higher. They depend on the products, your prices, how many people you reach, and how many parcels come back. Inside the app, the earnings planner in MyKade Academy turns your own monthly goal into orders and messages per day, so you can see whether it fits your life.

It grows with you

Many people start with an hour a day. If it goes well, there are more tools: answering Facebook and Instagram messages in one inbox, your own Daraz store, or your own website. You don't need any of those to begin. See selling with one hour a day for a realistic routine.
